Refugio Perez

ATTORNEY

Refugio is a proud native of Colorado. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in Denver, where he was on the Dean’s List and served as President of the Pre-Law Society. He received his Juris Doctorate from American University in Washington D.C., where he was a Marshall Brennan Fellow. Refugio’s main areas of practice include commercial litigation, real estate acquisitions, litigation, and business administrative law. He provides strategic counsel for clients ranging from developers and investors on acquisitions and dispositions for real estate development, as well as other construction professionals with litigation needs, including mechanics liens and contract disputes. In dealing with clients on a diverse range of issues, Refugio’s understanding of his clients’ business needs and litigation strategies provides an opportunity to anticipate potential legal problems before they surface.

Jim is a proud native of Colorado. He received his bachelor’s degree from Colorado College, MBA from Northwestern University, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver. Jim has a strong tax background which lends itself as a practical approach to the areas of business entity formation (corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, etc.), business and real estate transactions (purchases, sales, mergers, etc.), nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations (formation, tax qualification and operational issues), estate planning (wills and trusts), and estate administration. Additionally, Jim has represented nonprofit organizations in connection with obtaining and maintaining their income and property tax-exempt status as well as individual clients in their charitable tax and estate planning matters.  He authored language for inclusion in the Internal Revenue Code to save an historic Denver landmark from almost certain demolition and worked with the Colorado legislature on language that is still part of Colorado’s property tax exemption statute. He also served for nine years on the Denver Metro YMCA Board of Trustees, which included chairing their Financial Development Committee, and he is currently on the board of the Colorado Planned Giving Roundtable. Jim offers straightforward techniques and strategies in order to accomplish the client’s desired objectives in a manner that is understandable to the client.

Megan Kelly

Megan serves as Of Counsel with the firm of Hamilton Faatz, PC

Megan received her bachelor’s from Western Michigan University and received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver. Megan has practiced law in Denver, Colorado for twenty years, and is licensed to practice in Florida, Colorado and the District of Columbia.  In our now mobile world, she resides mainly in Naples, Florida but actively serves Hamilton Faatz, PC clients via all forms of remote access. Prior to launching her own firm in 2018, Megan worked for Hamilton Faatz, PC since 1999, where she initially represented clients in litigation involving various industries from construction to water and land rights, as well as assisting businesses and individuals with their corporate and estate planning needs. This litigation background uniquely situates Megan to help her business clients mitigate their day-to-day operational risks. Megan has and continues to represent businesses from many industries from manufacturers, to ranchers, to federal contractors. Including assisting businesses with their various needs, including contracts, leases, startups, providing ongoing strategic consultation and even international operations. As an estate planning attorney, Megan handles both the planning side as well as probate and administration in both Colorado and Florida.

Megan is particularly passionate about encouraging women to be involved in protecting their most important assets, their children, as well as their financial assets. She collaborates with many industry professionals such as financial planners, insurance professionals, as well as medical personnel, to ensure her clients have the resources they need to address all of their estate planning needs.

Alex received his bachelor’s degree from Vanguard University in southern California before earning his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver, where he received the Howard J. Jenkins Award for academic excellence in Labor Law. Alex has practiced law since 2016 and has practiced in areas including: governmental/municipal law, civil rights law, employment law, personal injury, commercial litigation, and criminal defense. Alex is licensed in both State and Federal court, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

Sean J. Lane

Sean serves as Of Counsel with the firm of Hamilton Faatz, PC. 

Sean received his bachelor’s from the University of Colorado-Boulder and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver in 2000. Sean has practiced law for more than twenty years and has profound knowledge for the United States Judicial System, specializing in governmental/municipal law, civil rights law, and criminal defense. Beginning as a law student, Sean worked for the District Attorney’s Office in the 18th Judicial District until 2003. Only three months after passing the bar, Sean was promoted to supervisor of the Aurora County Court, where he supervised Arapahoe, Douglas and Elbert County Courts, and was responsible for training all newly hired deputy district attorneys, before ultimately moving into felony prosecution in Arapahoe County. In 2003, Sean left the District Attorney’s Office and moved into private practice, now known as The Lane Law Firm.

Denis H Mark

Denis serves as Of Counsel with the firm of Hamilton Faatz, PC. 

Denis received his bachelor’s from Tuft’s University in Medford, Massachusetts and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Colorado. Denis has practiced law for more than forty years and has extensive experience in commercial and probate litigation. During his lengthy career he has tried many high-profile cases in state and federal courts throughout the country, where he has successfully argued numerous federal and state appeals, including several which have been reported and have received national publicity. Additionally, Denis has been an active member of several professional associations, including the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association where he chaired the Amicus Committee, which oversaw the preparation of “friend of the court” briefs filed in important cases on behalf of the organization, while also serving on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of that same organization. Denis has continuously held the Martindale-Hubbell’s AV rating since 1987.

John Schlie

 John serves as Of Counsel with the firm of Hamilton Faatz, PC. 

John received his bachelor’s from The University of Iowa where he graduated with honors and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver. John has practiced law for more than forty years and has extensive experience in multiple practice areas, including complex commercial and securities litigation and federal criminal defense, having tried many jury cases in various state and federal courts. Additionally, John has been a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the United States District Court for the District of Colorado since 1991 and was appointed to its Standing Committee for two terms from 1996-2002. He was also appointed by the Chief Judge to serve as a Member of the Merit Selection Panel for Magistrate Judges for the United States District Court for the District of Colorado from 1998- 2002. John lectured on the Preparation of Trial Notebooks for the National Business Institute in 2001 and 2002 and on cross examination at the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar Trial Practice Institute in 1994.

Honorable Vincent White serves as Of Counsel with the firm of Hamilton Faatz, PC.  

Judge White brings his wealth of knowledge and experience as Judge Advocate General, Assistant City Attorney, Deputy Attorney General, State and Federal Court Judge and as a Senior Judge in the areas of personal injury, employment, probate, military, medical malpractice and municipal law to all areas of the dispute resolution process. Judge White has received numerous awards and accolades during his time as a lawyer, Judge, and faculty member. During his time on the bench, he presided over thousands of civil, domestic relations, criminal, probate and mental health cases and trials. Judge White has been a certified mediator since 2010. He has conducted private mediations in civil, domestic relations, probate and employment matters. Additionally, he has presided over arbitrations and served as a special master relative to civil matters. Judge White continues to serve as a member of the State of Colorado Office of Dispute Resolution Advisory Committee. Additionally, he maintains his position as a faculty member for the National Judicial College Dispute Resolution Skills program where he teaches all aspects of civil mediation and trial and courtroom procedure to Judges from across the world. In his most recent position, Judge White was appointed by the United States Attorney General Lorreta Lynch to be a Federal Judge in San Francisco, California. Prior to that, Judge White served as a District Court Judge in the 18th Judicial District for ten years where he presided over thousands of cases in the areas of personal injury, civil, employment, probate, domestic relations and criminal matters. Prior to being appointed to the bench, Judge White was appointed by then Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar to be the Deputy Attorney General for the State of Colorado Office of the Attorney General Employment Section.

Dennis Whitmer

Dennis serves as Of Counsel with the firm of Hamilton Faatz, PC

Dennis received his Juris Doctorate from Kansas University and his M.S. from Kansas State University. Dennis has practiced law for more than forty years, as well as being a retired corporate trust officer with over thirty-one years of experience. His practice primarily concentrates on representing fiduciaries, and he has recently served as an expert witness in several cases involving complex fiduciary administration issues. Dennis continuously held the position of both vice president and trust officer with Colorado State Bank and Trust N.A. from 1987 through 2011. Additionally, he has also served as the chair of the Statutory Revision Committee, a member of the Orange Book Committee, as well as chair of the Statutory Revision Subcommittee, which reviewed the Uniform Estate Tax Apportionment Act.

With almost ten years’ paralegal experience, Ariadna focuses on civil litigation, real estate, construction, entity formation and management, and estate planning and administration. Ariadna is bilingual and fluent in both Spanish and English. Ariadna holds an A.A.S. degree from Community College of Aurora and a paralegal certificate from the American Bar Association approved paralegal training program at Community College of Aurora.
